yale sappern fellowship program

The Sappern Fellowship Program offers law student hands-on experience in family law while providing assistance to individuals facing domestic violence and other urgent legal challenges.

about the program

In a small office in the New Haven County Courthouse, something extraordinary happens every day. Law students sit across from people facing some of the most challenging moments of their lives and help them navigate the complex legal system when they need it most.

The Sappern Fellowship Program connects Quinnipiac University School of Law students with individuals who need assistance filing critical legal documents, particularly restraining orders. For many of our clients, we represent hope when they have nowhere else to turn.

our mission

We believe that everyone deserves access to justice, regardless of their financial situation, education level, or family support system. The Sappern Fellowship Program ensures that vulnerable individuals—often victims of domestic violence—receive the guidance and support they need to protect themselves and their families.

What Program Participants Say

Sara Bonsall, Spring 2025 Fellow

“This experience taught me that being a lawyer is about more than knowing the law, it’s showing up for your community. I am proud to say I have been a Sappern Fellow, and I will carry this experience with me into every office, agency, and legal role I take on in the future.”

Dani Ramos, Fall 2024 Fellow

“The Sappern Fellowship was a great opportunity that allowed me to gain first hand experience with client counseling and interviewing skills. Working one on one with TRO applicants helped me to develop compassion while also enhancing my application of the law when working closely with judges.”

Trinh Nguyen, Summer 2024 Fellow

“When someone comes to the courthouse because they need a TRO, they may not have access to support services, or legal services, and they might think that legal professionals will be stern or hard to talk to. But as a Sappern Fellow I was able to give people time and attention to be heard.”

program highlights

Since our inception in 2000, the Sappern Fellowship Program has:

  • Supported over 150 Fellows
  • Helped about 1,400 clients annually
  • Provided services in New Haven, Bridgeport, Waterbury, and Norwich
  • Trained future lawyers who carry our values of compassion and service into their careers

how we help

Our Fellows assist with:

  • Restraining order applications and documentation
  • Explaining legal processes and procedures
  • Connecting clients with additional resources like Legal Aid
  • Providing emotional support during difficult legal proceedings

While Fellows cannot provide legal advice, they offer something equally valuable: patient guidance, compassionate support, and the assurance that no one has to face the legal system alone.

The Sappern Fellowship Program is made possible through the generous support of the Yale Sappern Memorial Fund and the dedication of Quinnipiac University School of Law students who believe in making justice accessible to all.
